In this blog, we’ll explore the most common types of trims, their uses, sustainability considerations, and what brands need to think about when choosing them.

Why Metal Trims Matter

Metal trims are more than practical details. While rivets, buttons and buckles may start as functional fastenings, they can also act as branded trims — strengthening identity, elevating perception and adding tactile value. In some cases, they even become iconic, instantly associated with a brand’s signature look. Think of the rivets on denim jeans or a branded buckle on a luxury handbag — they’re not just components, they’re storytelling devices.

Common Types of Metal Trims

Cord Stoppers

Made from plastic or metal, cord stoppers use friction to adjust cord length. They are widely used in activewear, outerwear and casual garments. Cord stoppers offer both utility and branding opportunity as the company logo can be lasered, etched, engraved and filled with colour. Customisation ensures even the smallest elements carry brand identity.

Cord ends

Used to conceal cord tips, cord ends are small but impactful decorative features. They prevent fraying while adding a polished finish, particularly in sportswear, loungewear and accessories.

Pin badges

Secured with a butterfly back, pin badges are a versatile way for brands to make a statement. They’ve enjoyed a resurgence as collectable items, enabling customers to proudly wear brand loyalty. (Discover more in our dedicated blog on pin badges.). A well-crafted metal badge exudes quality and durability, leaving a lasting audience impression.

Zip pullers

We typically supply the puller, not the slider or zipper itself. Functionality depends on matching the puller with the right slider. They can be engraved, etched and colour-infilled to reflect a brand’s identity. Fun fact: the word “zip” was coined in 1923 when BF Goodrich mimicked the sound as he closed his boots.

Snaps and poppers

These consist of male and female parts that fasten when force is applied. Commonly made from brass and electroplated for durability, they are integral to outerwear, childrenswear and uniforms.

Rivets

Rivets reinforce stress points in garments, such as denim pocket corners. They consist of two parts — the burr (visible) and the rivet (underside) — attached with specialised machinery. Beyond strength, rivets can be branded or designed to complement a garment’s aesthetic.

Eyelets

Often brass, steel or aluminium, eyelets strengthen fabric holes and are commonly used for lacing or drawstrings. They also serve a decorative purpose, appearing on footwear, jackets and accessories.

Metal Buttons

From brass to aluminium, these buttons are usually shank-style, though variations include 2- or 4-hole designs. They are measured in lignes (40 lignes = 2.5cm). Metal buttons bring durability, tactile appeal and a premium touch, making them popular in tailoring, denim and luxury apparel.

Buckles

Traditionally brass or steel, buckles are fastened with prongs or sliders and can be embellished to suit brand aesthetics. An interesting fact: men’s garments button left-to-right because right-handed soldiers needed their weapon arm free — a detail that still influences fastenings today.

Sustainable Metal Choices

As sustainability becomes non-negotiable, trims are expected to follow suit. Aluminium, often considered a ‘green’ metal, is highly recyclable and resistant to corrosion, making it an eco-conscious choice. Nickel and other metals can also be responsibly sourced, ensuring trims meet environmental expectations.

Certifications such as OEKO-TEX® ensure products are free from harmful substances — protecting both people and the planet. At Weavabel, we work with certified suppliers to make sure your sustainable trims are not only functional but also safe and eco-friendly.

Colouring and Finishing Techniques

To align trims with brand aesthetics, a range of finishes can be applied:

  • Electroplating: A metal coating applied to a solid substrate, enhancing durability and shine.
  • Rack Plating: Best for delicate parts, though more costly due to the precision involved.
  • Barrel Plating: Cost-effective for high-volume, durable parts, ideal for fast-moving production.

These finishing methods influence not only the appearance but also the tactile feel and long-term performance of custom metal trims. See our metals chart for more details.

Key Considerations for Brands

When selecting metal trims, it’s essential to think beyond aesthetics:

  • Production process: Garments passing through needle detectors may require non-ferrous components.
  • Child safety: Easy-open fasteners and secure attachments are essential, as loose trims can pose hazards.
  • Testing: Swimwear trims, for example, may need salt spray testing to ensure durability in harsh environments.
  • Lead times: Metals typically take longer to produce — around 4–6 weeks compared to woven labels or swing tags.

By keeping these factors in mind, brands can balance functionality, durability and brand storytelling effectively.

Final Thoughts

Metal trims offer brands the opportunity to merge practicality with storytelling. From rivets that symbolise durability and quality to buttons that embody luxury, every piece can reinforce your identity. With the right material choices, finishes and certifications, you can elevate your garments while meeting consumer expectations for quality and sustainability.
